Indiana University East, Richmond, Indiana, is accepting applications for a Groundskeeper. The position is responsible for operating equipment safely in the maintenance of the lawns and gardens and in the removal of snow and ice. Work is performed outdoors, throughout inclement weather conditions. The Groundskeeper also helps move furniture and setup events, as scheduled. The person in the position is expected to maintain required standards of appearance and safety, in addition to safely and effectively using equipment and chemicals in the performance of the job. Furthermore, the Groundskeeper maintains an on-call status when weather emergencies are anticipated and responds when required, ensuring the campus is accessible to students, faculty, and staff during normal operating times.
Prepares the campus for daily visitors and special events, ensuring that green and surrounding spaces are well maintained, the plants and collections are healthy, and IU East is safe and attractive for the public. Perform all grounds tasks including mowing, trimming, aerating, plant care, litter pickup, leaf collection, and vegetation control. Prepare planting beds with hand and power tools; integrate soil adjustments; plant bulbs, flowers, ground covers, trees, and shrubs; apply mulch. Prune trees, shrubs, vines, and hedges.
Loads and unloads supplies and shipments received using a forklift or manual lifting. Move office, conference room, or classroom furniture such as desks, chairs, cabinets, easels, bookcases, etc. within rooms and/or across campus and between buildings. Adhere to safety, moving techniques, and IU East rules and policies in order to reduce risk of injury and damage to property.
Provides operational functions before, during, and after events. Assist with field and site set-up and take-down, ensuring all exit doors are clear during event and securing all entrances at conclusion of event.
Applies pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers adhering to accepted industry standards, in addition to University, state, and federal safety guidelines. Prepares and mix necessary chemical agents related to pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers; organize work area prior to beginning task; ensure cleanliness upon completion.
Assists in irrigation system installation; change manually as needed. Perform preventative maintenance and repair of irrigation system, as requested. Monitor irrigation schedule to avoid interference with campus activities.
Removes snow and ice from parking lots, sidewalks, steps, and other areas of public access during inclement weather conditions, to provide a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff. Operate campus vehicles (trucks, snow plows, etc.) in a safe and prescribed manner. Hand shovel and/or salt steps and other areas inaccessible to motorized equipment.
Performs regular preventive maintenance on tractors, mowers, sprayers, seeder, sweeper, etc. to ensure safe operation and longevity of equipment. Report theft, vandalism, missing items, problems, and issues of operation of equipment to the supervisor upon immediate knowledge.
Removes litter from grounds, empty outdoor refuse containers, and maintain cleanliness of campus to uphold the Indiana University East image.
Participates in projects, as needed such as: installing traffic signage, patching asphalt, repairing turf, cleaning of eaves and gutters, assisting with parking and crowd control for special events and programs, etc.
Performs other related duties, as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit not listed herein.
Mows, trims and edges turf areas using riding mower, push mower, weed whip and edger. Mulches,weeds, removes thatch, aerates, and trims and edges around flower beds, walks, pathways and walls.Prepares planting beds with hand and power tools; integrates soil amendments; plants bulbs, flowers,ground covers, trees and shrubs; applies mulch. Prunes trees, shrubs, vines and hedges.
Applies seed, fertilizer and chemicals.
Rakes leaves. Performs snow and ice removal with hand tools and power equipment.
Participates in a variety of general maintenance tasks
Job Type: Full Time
High school diploma or GED.
1 year of experience with landscape or grounds related work; OR
1 year of experience with light general maintenance.

Ability to apply seed, fertilizer and chemicals.
May be required to acquire and maintain position-required certifications.
