Incumbent serves as a Phlebotomist for the Health Center, responsible for maintaining Health Clinic laboratory operations, ensuring sanitary conditions, and assisting the public.
Maintains lab equipment and supplies, performing quality control tests on analyzers and test kits to ensure accuracy, conducting routine instrument maintenance, and inspecting lab supply shipments for deterioration and proper handling, contacting lab suppliers and manufacturers as necessary.
Performs various clerical tasks, including recording and filing patient test results, maintaining quality control records and equipment maintenance records, and updating Laboratory Procedural Manual.
Conducts and processes laboratory tests, including obtaining and/or testing blood samples and body fluids from clinic patients for routine and diagnostic purposes, and assisting in performing electrocardiograms (EKG’s) and hearing tests.
Maintains inventory of lab supplies, ordering and restocking supplies as needed.
Maintains sanitary lab conditions, including cleaning lab and disinfecting instruments and countertops daily.
Maintains current knowledge on laboratory procedures, including attending meetings and seminars, and reading journals and bulletins as required.
Performs related duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
High School diploma or GED.
Certification by ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology) and ability to maintain certification as required.
Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of Hepatitis series.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to update laboratory procedural manuals accordingly.
Ability to properly operate a variety of standard office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, fax machine, copier, analyzer, and centrifuge.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, supply companies, manufacturers, sales representatives, and the general public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to analyze and evaluate data, make determinations, and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to compute/perform arithmetic operations, such as calculating inventory and tabulating test results.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain and follow oral or written instructions.
Ability to read and interpret detailed reports, such as EKG’s and lab test results.
Ability to plan and layout assigned work projects.
Ability to file, copy data from one document to another, and maintain organized files.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
Ability to work rapidly for long periods, under time pressure, and on several tasks at the same time.
Ability to occasionally work extended hours and travel out of town for seminars, sometimes overnight.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.
